Ascended in the 1980’s he reinvented Republican policies that favored deregulation and the growth of business in America. These Ideas markedly opposed the views of the governmental interventionist policies of the 1960’s and 70’s with these ideas Reagan hoped to decrease government Involvement and heavy taxes. With these tax cuts Reagan’s thinking was that many new businesses would spawn and that it would have a trickledown effect by not only empowering businesses to grow and hire more people which in the end would benefit all from those on top in the corporate world all the way down to the lowest person in the company in which everyone benefits. This was welcome news not only to the Republicans but also the â€Å"lunch bucket democrats† who were working class democrats who predecessor Jimmy Carter of whom they thought they were ignored by. As a result of this many government services were slashed and created ideas of the government being the problem. With this many republicans encouraged individuals to do good for themselves for the government would not do this for them. With this encouragement of business growth and economic prosperity for as many people as possible individualism became a way of life in the 1980’s. The acquisition of wealth and indicators of it really helped to drive this decade in the 1980’s where it seemed most important to acquire as much â€Å"material† goods as possible. These ideas were also shown in the pop culture world as the artist Madonna made a hit song in the 80’s called â€Å"material girl† a song of the times basically about greed and gaining as material things as you possibly could with no shame of this greed. Also Gordon Gekko the fictional business tycoon in the film â€Å"Wall Street† stands up at board meeting to stress and states â€Å"Greed is good†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Greed will not only fix this malfunctioning corporation called Teldar paper, but also the other malfunctioning corporation called the U. S. of A. † There were even excesses being taken in sports, as Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds had greed of singles, doubles and stolen bases, also greed in gambling cost him his spot in Major League Baseball. It was also in this decade baseball experienced â€Å"free agency† destroying loyalties and players selling themselves to the highest bidder as player contracts doubled from just the decade before. Once these Republican policies had trickled down to popular culture it almost seemed to validate this style of politics, it seemed as if the Republicans ascendance to power had spawned this culture and decade of greed that was so actively embraced by the American public. With this these politicians simply stated that they were just acting in accordance to what the public’s wishes were. With this success that Reagan had in the 80’s America had once again began to reassert itself on the world stage after a challenging decade of struggling in the 1970’s. Reagan is thought to be responsible also for the victory in the cold war that had lasted for decades before his term. The new thinking in the 80’s was not that this was greed but more of what the Republicans called prosperity and success. Some of the negatives of these changes were Reagan deregulated everything which in effect destroyed competition and this created oligopolies. Some examples of these are in the airline industry he deregulated the industry causing every airline in the country, except 2 to become bankrupt, as the deregulation in the broadcast industry resulted in just a few major players like Disney and Clear Channel dominating the playing field. As for under the Reagan administration money in politics became more strong then ever and that still holds true today in the world of politics for it seems like we no longer have elections, we more like have auctions for where it seems the candidate who has the most money to spend on getting their name out is usually the one who wins in these political battles, especially for the Presidency. What this does now and back then in the 80’s where it started is a corporation who might want certain laws or tax breaks passed to better help their needs funds that candidate to get elected and then in turn expects them favors to be returned when that candidate is elected. This new concentration of wealth created a whole new class of millionaires, however on the downside for every millionaire there were several hundred homeless people. With this came more negativity that came with the corporate greed of the 80’s. For these people who became homeless and poor due to these millionaires greed were blamed for dragging down the economy by Republican politicians and their mouthpieces in the media, while the truth we found out later is that indeed it was these rich people who were ripping us off and actually were responsible for dragging down the economy. Going as far to blaming the poor the city of Los Angeles installed a fingerprint system to guard against welfare fraud that cost the city and hardworking tax payers 30 million dollars, and for all of this it caught one cheater. While at the same time â€Å"White collar† crime was rising and costing us more than street crime cost, also doing more damage and arguably causing more deaths. Reagan also had a deregulation of the savings and loans industry which was a total debacle and ended up costing Americans 500 billion dollars which is part of the still current banking problem that is going on today. Unfortunately Reagan also began the practice of sending American manufacturing jobs overseas, another move that made the rich even more rich and greedy and made the poor have even less than they did before. Despite all these negatives it can be argued that Ronald Reagan was the most important and influential President of the last 60 years, loved by the Republicans and loathed by the liberals. Reagan turned half a century of political and economic orthodoxy and turned it on its head. It can be argued that he turned those who were Roosevelt democrats. So whether you loved or hated Reagan there is no doubt that administration and the greed of 80’s is still alive today. My though would be if your rich, you like the corporate greed and excessiveness that took place in the 80’s, however if you are poor you are wondering why this turned out like it did.

The protagonist in Jack London’s To Build a Fire implies a character that is cool, calm, and collected under the pressures of loneliness and landscape. The text suggests that the man is alone in the Artic wilderness of Alaska with all it’s dangers and natural mysteries. London’s character seems to be a direct contrast to his surroundings, where the land is seemingly limitless and wondrous, the man is limited and admittedly, without imagination. Similarly, in contrast with the timeless and constantly changing character of the natural world is the character of the man, who displays serious calculation and conscious, purposeful action. Though the man does show signs of fear and apprehension, it becomes apparent that he wants to believe that he is stronger than his surroundings and that his feelings do not reflect a defect in his own character. In the end the man meets his demise by realizing that nature is more powerful and swift than man with all his equipment and thoughts. The most important feat for the man becomes the simple ability to build a fire. Early on in the text, it is stated that the man was of no imagination and for this reason had little appreciation for the wilderness and all the elements that he simply noted in his life and on this journey. â€Å"The trouble with him was that he was without imagination. He was quick and alert in the things of life, but only in the things, and not in the significances†. It was, in fact, the significances that the man would learn that were of the greatest consequence. Although, he was warned by an older man to never travel alone, the man paid no mind to this warning and believed that he could conquer nature alone. The man, alone in the wilderness and only in the company of his dog, was also experiencing an emptiness in his thoughts. â€Å"Empty as the man’s mind was of thoughts, he was keenly observant, and he noticed the changes in the creek, the curves and bends and timber-jams, and always he sharply noted where he placed his feet†. The man is one of action and not of much contemplation, even his emotions seem hollow and are compared to the fears that his dog instinctively experiences. But, it is due to this emptiness and lack of appreciation of the severity and vastness of nature and his human nature that leads him to falter and step into the creek, even as observant as he believed he was. It is to build a fire that is the most unnatural and to the man, impossible ability of humankind. The feat of the most primitive men in history was the only thing that could save the man’s life, but he had to surrender to the power and forces of nature. â€Å"He knew there must be no failure. When it is seventy-five below zero, a man must not fail in his first attempt to build a fire–that is, if his feet are wet†. Just as the man had the capacity to know that he must succeed in his attempt to build a fire, knowing this and believing that his ability to think would allow him to conquer nature was his downfall. In conclusion, the man in â€Å"To Build a Fire†, believes himself to be strong and smart, but not imaginative or appreciative of the wilderness around him. He serves as a direct contrast to the world around him, as he uses his watch, matches, and other man-made objects on his journey. Evidentialist Method Apologetics Essay Introduction Apologetics comes in several different methods that are utilized to defend one’s faith and also to evangelize. One method of apologetics is Evidentialism, also known as Natural Theology. Evidentialism is probably the most popular form of apologetics, if not the one that leads the field. Our current world demands proof and supporting data and Evidentialism stresses the deliverance of accurate substantiation with the hope of bringing cynics and criticizers to the truths of Christianity. Evidentialism continues to excel in the field of apologetics and does well in confronting the major worldviews with the truths of the Christian faith that can be proven with factual analysis. This review will provide the reader with a summary of the Evidentialist Method, a critique of the Evidentialist Method, and a list of some of the more popular Evidentialists. Summary of the Evidentialist Method Apologetics comes from 1 Peter 3:15 and is most properly defined as giving a defense. In his commentary, John Walvoord states, â€Å"(apologian, the â€Å"defense† which a defendant makes before a judge; (Acts 22:1; 25:16) for their hope in Christ.† It is the impetus for Evidentialist apologetics to follow this call and seek to â€Å"Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.† Another writer, Dan Story, states, â€Å"This is ‘evidential’ apologetics, and it works on the premise that the weight of the evidence will always support Christianity and always refute contradicting beliefs.† In order for Evidentialism to be effective, it must hold to its premise of dispensing the truths about Christianity by establishing factuality. The Evidentialist is able to take any offered topic and utilize it as evidence as they are stimulated by the antagonist’s desire to deliberate logic and reason. In Acts 19:8, the Apostle Paul was diligently â€Å"arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.† Yet, Paul understood completely that there was none other that could open the hearts of men except God (Acts 16:14). Critique of the Evidentialist Method The Evidentialist Model for apologetics is a very sensible method to be utilized in evangelism. The world today demands physical, tangible proof and relies only on what can be seen and studied, and the Evidentialist is quite versed in the practicality and effective use of the method to clarify God’s truths. The method accepts the essential foundations of the non-believing doubter and tries to supply purposeful truth to that individual area. This reason-giving model has established its effectiveness in apologetics. There are a couple of issues of concern when it comes to the application of Evidentialism. One concern that stands out is that it adopts the thought that the fallen man can come to the supposition of Christ as Savior. It is my contention and belief that aside from the Holy Spirit man cannot come to this conclusion. However, I do feel that via the logical evidence presented, God opens the non-believer’s heart. Story clearly shows the â€Å"Holy Spirit also convicts and convinces people of the truth through extra-biblical evidences.† Popular Evidentialists History shows that the method of Evidentialism has been utilized for quite some time. There have been many superior thinkers who have used the method and have contributed greatly to the enhancement of apologetics. Although the list is long, a few of these men merit mention, William Paley (1743-1805), John Locke (1632-1704), and more contemporarily, Norman Geisler, William Lane Craig, Lee Strobel, Gary Habermas and Ravi Zacharias. These stellar thinkers have all utilized Evidentialism in furthering apologetics. Vicarious Living Essay In Gabriel Garcia Marquezs book Chronicle of a Death Foretold our heroine is a young woman, one of many children in a poor family. Her name is Angela Vicario. Angelas last name is Vicario as in vicarious living it is clearly connotated in this passage to show its meaning of a representative, or not the real one. In this passage of the Chronicle of a Death Foretold Marquez very efficiently utilizes his writing skills and literary devices to present us Angelas thoughts. Angelas role in this stereotypical romance is that of an underprivileged woman who has found herself a husband, who is flashy and a wealthy outsider. Angela herself, however, resists this role until after she had been returned to the family. This resistance involves rejecting the refined marital relationship that everyone else seems to accept. Her mother is urging her to marry Bayardo San Roman for his wealth because love can be learned. This indicates a belief that one husband is as good as another and that money is what separates them. Angela finally accepts her role in this stereotypical romance along with its refined relationships. Her mother is right. Love can be learned. It is learned by Angela under the influence of rejection and the lash. She begins loving the man she rightfully hated. She starts writing hundreds of letters to try and convince him to return to her. The letters that Angela sends to Bayardo explore the notion of love letter. Whereas the function of love letters is traditionally to express emotion or convey longing, Bayardo does not value Angelas love letters for their content. By not opening any of the love letters, Bayardo shows that the repeated act of sending a love letter, rather than the love letters actual content, demonstrates the love that Angela feels for him. Love letters are often similar and interchangeable; their content is less persuasive to Bayardo than the fact that they continue to arrive. His attitude makes the love letters part of the ritual of love, and underscores his relationship with Angela as another ritual within the story. The readers realization that the marriage of the hero and the heroine will be founded on the quantities of stereotypes not the conversations. This removes the whole aspect of a happy ending. The sentence structure in this passage is very important and used very skilfully by Marquez. The narrator describes Angela writing her letters as though he is able to feel her raw emotions. He employs longer sentences when describing scenes of her writing her letters, and switches back to short sentences when describing her dismay. Marquez also uses many words twice in a row to emphasize the anxiousness of Angela in wait On Friday she gave it (letter) to the postmistress who came Friday However, when describing the day Bayardo had returned he only described it as halfway through one August day. This lack of information shows how little affection Angela feels for Bayardo. Also Angela weighs her love as more passionate than Bayardos. She was trying to put a value on her love. Her name is a very good metaphor which described this. Her name meaning not the real one represents how her love is not real. Also the use of literary devises gave the reader a more realistic view of the story. Marquez uses magic realism and depicts a world where Angela is convinced that she has slept with Bayardo and lost her virginity for the first time. She is unashamed to reveal this in her letter and talks about it with full feeling and passion. Marquez describes her feelings as very real and has exaggerated a few details. This gives this passage a sense of magic realism making the reader believe Angela. Marquezs use of imagery in the description of Bayardos return is very significant. He returns just as he had first met Angela. Nothing about him has changed, except for the obvious exterior. This implies to the reader that Bayardo that had not changed his way of thinking nor has his character or personality. The contrast Marquez provides between the past and present represents to the reader his love and passion for Angela. Moreover, Marquez also uses embroidery several times in this passage. Embroidery is connotated positively in this passage to symbolize an invisible thread that ties together both Angela and Bayardo. The letters are the invisible thread between the two. Angela reaches consciousness through a protracted process of letter writing. This is clearly the function of the letters, which are never opened by her Bayardo. As the letters progress they mature and grow with Angela. Each letter has a beautiful crescendo quality and each letter shows Angelas growth spiritually and mentally. This passage is not one of the major important passages in the story, since it does not give more information on the murder of Santiago; however, what this passage does provide is a key understanding of how Angelas mind works. She has been like a prisoner, just writing letters and just hoping to be free one day. Writing all those letters Angela comes out at the end as a liberated woman, individuated and separate. She achieves the emancipation through the magic of the letter.

Patterns of Inheritence in Drosophila Melanogaster The Fruit Flies of Melanogaster Introduction:    Many simple patterns of inheritance follow the laws of Mendel. Dominant traits will always be expressed when present, and recessive traits will only be expressed when two recessive alleles are present. When crossing a pure homozygous dominant trait with a pure homozygous recessive trait as the P generation, it is expected that all the offspring in the F1 generation will express the dominant trait, since every offspring will receive one copy of the dominant allele from one parent and one copy of the recessive allele from the other. In the F2 generation, the expected outcome will be a 3:1 phenotypic ratio of dominant to recessive, and a 1:2:1 genotypic ratio of homozygous dominant to heterozygous to homozygous recessive (Campbell et al. 268). This simple inheritance pattern explains many of the inheritance phenomena exhibited in nature, but some inheritance patterns go beyond Mendel’s laws of genetics. In incomplete dominance, neither allele is dominant over the other so the outcome is a blend of both traits. In codominance, both traits are expressed separately. In mitochondrial inheritance, all offspring will receive specific genes from the mother. In X-linked recessive traits, the alleles are located on the X chromosome, and these conditions frequently appear in males because they only have one copy of the X chromosome (â€Å"Inheritance Patterns†). When the exact inheritance pattern is unknown in a cross, the ratios of each type of offspring help to determine if the inheritance pattern follows Mendel’s laws or if it is one of the above varieties. In fruit flies, the red and brown genes for eye color are located on autosomes. However, a mutation on the white gene in fruit flies on the X chromosome prevents any eye color from developing at all (â€Å"The Genetics of Eye Color†). The gene for white eye color is epistatic to the red and white eye genes. This is how fruit flies are able to have three different eye colors when the white mutation is not present, there will be a simple inheritance pattern between red and sepia eyes. When the mutation is present, the red or sepia eyes will not be expressed because they will be masked behind the white mutation. Drosophila melanogaster were used in this procedure because they reproduce very quickly and are easily manageable. All their food and water needs are taken care of by the substance called media in the bottom of the vial. They are a convenient size because they are not too big, but they are small enough to easily distinguish traits under a microscope (â€Å"The Fruit Fly and Genetics†). The life cycle of the flies begins as eggs. From the eggs emerge the larvae, which look like tiny worms. The larvae grow through three stages until they reach the pupal stage. The pupae mature and darken in color for three to four days until they break forth from the pupal case to become adult flies (â€Å"Development†). In this experiment, three crosses were performed between different varieties of the fruit fly Drosophila Melanogaster. Cross 1 was between a sepia eyed female and a wild type male, Cross 2 was between a white eyed female and a wild type male, and Cross 3 was between a red eyed, vestigial winged female with a sepia eyed, normal winged male. In Cross 1, a simple pattern of Mendel’s laws is predicted to be expressed. Wild type flies with red eyes is the dominant phenotype over sepia colored eyes. Sepia colored eyes are a result from a recessive gene, and only result when two sepia-eyed flies mate or when two heterozygous flies mate. Furthermore, sepia colored eyes is not dependent on the sex of the fly, so in the case of this cross all flies in the F1 generation should have red eyes, but be carriers for the sepia colored eye trait. In the F2 generation when the heterozygous flies mate, the predicted phenotypic ratio will be 3:1, where for every three red eyed flies there would be one sepia colored fly. The related genotypic ratio of homozygous dominant to heterozygous to homozygous recessive will be 1:2:1. Our hypothesis for Cross 1 is if there are no mutations and the cross follows Mendel’s laws of independent assortment, then the ratio of red to sepia eyed flies will be 3:1 for the F2 generation. In cross 2, sex linked inheritance plays a role. The mutation for white colored eyes is X-linked recessive. When the white eyed female is crossed with a red eyed male, all the males in the F1 generation should exhibit the mutation, and all the females should have red eyes. This is because the males can only accept a recessive allele from the mother and the Y chromosome from the father which does not carry the mutation for white eye color. The females will receive the red gene from the father’s X chromosome which will cover the white gene from the mother. The F2 generation produced by the white eyed male and heterozygous female will thus have a genotypic ratio of 1:1:1:1. Therefore, our hypothesis for Cross 2 for the F2 generation is that if the gene for the white eye mutation is located on the X chromosome, then the phenotypic ratio will be 1:1:1:1 if sex is considered. In cross 3, the focus shifted from just looking at eye colors to looking at eye colors and wing type. The fruit flies could either have normal wings or exhibit vestigial wings, which are shortened. Flies with vestigial wings have a defect in their vestigial gene located on the second chromosome. So, a dihybrid cross will be used to determine the predicted phenotypes and genotypes of the F1 and F2 generation. A dihybrid cross uses two traits with two alleles each, and so two different aspects of an organism are crossed. Vestigial wings are a recessive trait, so two recessive alleles must be inherited in order to express the trait. This is also the case with sepia colored eyes. So when a parent generation of a red eyed vestigial winged female is crossed with a sepia eyed normal winged male, all of the offspring in the F1 generation should have red eyes and normal wings. The F2 generation, however, are produced by heterozygotes and thus four phenotypes should be seen: red eyed normal, s epia normal, sepia vestigial, and red eyed vestigial. Therefore, our hypothesis for the F2 generation in Cross 3 is that if both traits follow Mendel’s laws of independent assortment for the dihybrid cross, then the predicted phenotypic ratio will be 9:3:3:1. Methodology: Materials used include: Vials Microscopes Fly nap and anesthesia wand Paint brushes Fly food Fly netting Cotton plugs Plain white index card Procedure: First, prepare vials for the fruit flies to live in. Obtain three glass vials, and estimate a few centimeters of Carolina Instant Drosophila Medium in each. After, put a few drops of water in the culture and let it sit a few minutes to soak in the medium. At this point, also put in a fly net. Obtain F1 flies from instructor for the three crosses. Check the vials for life. The flies need to be alive for active breeding purposes. However, ensure that there are no F2 larvae yet, as this could be misleading for the results. Check the food for moisture, and add water with a pipet if the food gets too dry. Anesthetize the fruit flies. Put the vials of flies upside down in the refrigerator, as this forces the flies into a state of inactivity. After approximately ten minutes, take the vials out and transport each of the three tubes (for the separate three crosses) into three different vials. Mark the three vials with tape for either cross 1, cross 2, or cross 3. Tap the flies into the new vials, and close it with a cotton plug with an anesthesia wand connected to it soaked in Flynap. Wait a few minutes for the flies to stop moving or flying to begin the next procedure. Shake the fruit flies onto a white index card and place the card under the dissecting microscope. Use the paintbrush to move the flies to the center of the viewing field in order to sex them and view them for the desired traits. Record the data in the data tables. Males have a solid black abdomen and sex combs on their forelegs, while females have a striped abdomen and no sex combs. Additionally, females are generally larger than males[1]. After recording the data for the flies, place them in the morgue. Record F1 data for three days, or until F2 larvae are seen. Repeat the above procedure using the same vials, but this time using only F2 flies. Record data for three days. Set the extra flies free, and clean out all the vials thoroughly. The primary villains are cartoon-like and there are many instances in which we are asked to believe if glass-blowing is so damn fascinating to all the secondary characters. The plot was negative. I found it to be very unbelievable.
